Appointment of Jomi Richard to the Board
The Solana Beach School District board has officially appointed Jomi Richard as its newest member following a public interview session on June 17, where she was the sole applicant. The board expressed its enthusiasm for Richard’s dedication to students and her eagerness to learn.
Oath of Office and Term Details
Richard took her oath of office the following day during the regular board meeting on June 18. As a provisional appointee, she will serve until the next general election in November 2026, where she may choose to run for a shortened term lasting until 2028.
Background and Experience
Having spent the past two years on the district’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC), which focuses on enhancing the educational experiences of students with disabilities, Richard felt that joining the board was a logical progression, despite the unexpected nature of the opportunity.
In her application, Richard noted, “My time with the PAC has shown me that supporting students in special education ultimately benefits all students.” She emphasized the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and understanding among all students, which can lead to improved educational outcomes.
Transition from Tanya Koshy
Richard succeeds Tanya Koshy, a dedicated school volunteer who was elected in November 2024 but decided to step down to care for her terminally ill father. Koshy reflected on her time on the board, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve and acknowledging the district’s impactful work.
Richard’s Personal and Professional Background
A graduate of University of San Diego High School (now Cathedral Catholic) and the University of San Diego, Richard co-manages a sporting equipment manufacturing and online retail business with her husband. She is a mother of two, one of whom has special needs, and has actively volunteered as a room parent and classroom helper at Carmel Creek School.
In addition to her PAC involvement, Richard has represented the district on the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education Community Advisory Committee and has served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) as well as a corporate board member for Catholic Charities, Diocese of San Diego.
Vision and Approach as a Board Member
During her interview, Richard described herself as encouraging, positive, and focused on solutions. She emphasized her commitment to prioritizing students in her role as a board member. Although she represents Area 5’s Carmel Valley, she acknowledged that her decisions would affect every family and student in the district.
Board clerk Gaylin Allbaugh praised Richard for her experience and understanding of the diverse cultures present in all seven schools, a perspective that not all new board members possess.
Board Member Insights
Board member Katie Süel highlighted Richard’s effective approach to board membership, which includes listening, asking questions, collaborating, and maintaining objectivity and inclusivity. Süel noted that Richard’s desire to learn and serve all students aligns perfectly with the expectations of a board member.
Acknowledgment of Tanya Koshy’s Contributions
At the June 12 meeting, the board and superintendent expressed their appreciation for Koshy’s contributions during her time on the board. Board President Dana King commended Koshy for her dedication, insightful contributions, and unwavering support for the district’s mission.
Vice President Debra Schade expressed her sadness at Koshy’s departure but was grateful that Richard was willing to step in and serve the community.
