After retiring in 2021, she was eager to start her vegetable garden but didn’t want to invest in a trench shovel for a one-time use. A simple online search led her to the Tool Lending Library, where she found the tools she needed.
Simple and Affordable Tool Rentals
The Tool Lending Library operates much like a traditional library, but instead of books, it offers a variety of gardening tools. For a nominal fee of $5, patrons can reserve and borrow tools for a week, making it an economical choice for gardening enthusiasts.
Liz Davis, the center’s volunteer and community engagement specialist, noted that they often have multiple copies of popular tools available. This is especially helpful for larger projects, such as school initiatives, where several tools may be required simultaneously.
Supporting Community Sustainability Efforts
The mission of the Solana Center extends beyond merely lending tools. Jessica Toth, the executive director, emphasized that the organization is committed to waste prevention and diversion. They provide resources on rainwater harvesting, composting, and zero-waste practices, along with a dedicated team ready to assist community members through their Rot Line, which offers guidance via phone or email.
Toth highlighted that their approach is not about criticizing individuals for not doing enough but rather about empowering them to take manageable steps toward sustainability.

For Chandler, her journey began with that initial search for a trench shovel. Now, she not only enjoys a flourishing garden but has also become an advocate for sustainability within her community.
“I find joy in promoting zero waste and healthy food choices, and I believe in the importance of renting tools instead of purchasing them,” she expressed.

In addition to gardening tools, the Solana Center’s Green Convene program offers rentals for event supplies, including dishware and glassware, further supporting the community’s efforts to reduce waste during gatherings.
