This sudden decision has intensified dissatisfaction among fans, many of whom had previously voiced concerns about the tour’s organization by G-Dragon’s agency, Galaxy, particularly regarding the Thailand leg.

The discontent among fans is partly rooted in Galaxy’s identity as an entertainment-technology firm that primarily focuses on metaverse and AI, rather than traditional concert management. Originally, the Bangkok concert was planned for an outdoor venue during the rainy season, one of the hottest and most humid periods in Thailand.

As the concert date approached, fans were left anxious and frustrated due to the lack of ticketing and seating information, which further fueled criticism from both local and international supporters.

Ongoing Controversies Surrounding the Tour

The cancellation of the Bangkok show adds to a series of controversies that have plagued Galaxy’s management of G-Dragon’s return to the stage. From July 8 to 10, fans organized a protest near the company’s headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, demanding accountability and transparency. Video messages displayed on truck screens accused the agency of poor planning and a lack of prioritization for premium fan club members during ticket sales.

A significant point of contention is the exclusive pre-sale structure for concert tickets. Despite being official fan club members, many fans discovered that VIP tickets for international shows were made available first through third-party platforms, leading some to question the value of their memberships.

Venue Choices and Health Concerns

Fans have also criticized the selection of smaller venues in cities like Macau, Jakarta, and Melbourne, which did not meet the local demand for tickets. Additionally, the addition of extra shows with little notice has resulted in grueling three-day performance schedules for G-Dragon, raising concerns about the potential impact on his health and the lack of long-term planning.

The North American and European legs of the tour have not been free from issues either. Concerts were announced only two months in advance, creating challenges for fans needing travel visas. Currently, Paris is the only confirmed European city on the tour schedule, leading to speculation about the company’s difficulties in securing venues.

Insights from Industry Executives

An executive from a prominent K-pop agency noted that not all blame should fall on Galaxy. “World tour venues are typically booked by local or global promoters. It’s likely that G-Dragon didn’t relinquish full control to Galaxy. The tour appears rushed, possibly because he wanted to connect with as many fans as possible shortly after his album release,” they explained.

However, the executive acknowledged that Galaxy lacks a strong history in music management. “They’ve never been recognized for managing artists, and G-Dragon should have been aware of that. This was his choice, and it came with inherent risks.”

Fans have also expressed dissatisfaction with the agency’s legal follow-through. Galaxy announced in April that it would take legal action against malicious online posts, but three months later, fans report no updates or progress, raising doubts about the agency’s commitment to protecting the artist.

Adding to the frustration is the perception that Galaxy has been leveraging G-Dragon’s image for its own promotional gain. Galaxy’s CEO, Choi Yong-ho, has frequently appeared in media and marketing related to the artist’s activities, leading some fans to accuse the agency of prioritizing brand exposure over the well-being of G-Dragon.

As of now, Galaxy has not issued a statement addressing the cancellation or the protests from fans. Despite the setback in Bangkok, G-Dragon is still scheduled to perform in Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Newark, Los Angeles, and Paris as part of his ongoing tour. G-Dragon joined Galaxy Corporation in November 2023 after departing from YG Entertainment.
