Solana Beach City Council Unveils Exciting La Colonia Park Upgrades

Solana Beach City Council Advances La Colonia Park Improvement Plans
Ongoing Development of La Colonia Park
During the recent meeting on July 16, the Solana Beach City Council revisited the enhancement plans for La Colonia Park as part of the ongoing master planning initiative.
Community Feedback Shapes Park Design
In February, the council gathered input on the proposed designs, which highlighted the need for additional green space, the transformation of an existing pickleball court into a picnic area, the introduction of more fruit trees, and increased parking along Stevens Avenue. The council expressed interest in incorporating both a youth center and a senior center into the park’s future layout.
Honoring Local Heritage
The city is also committed to collaborating with residents to create a long-term strategy for the Tree of Life tile display, which commemorates the Mexican families that settled in the area over a century ago. Resident Melissa Fischel emphasized the significance of this project during public comments, stating, “It is very important to the community.”
Balancing Landscaping Choices
Discussions also revolved around the balance between grassy areas and drought-resistant landscaping. Deputy Mayor Kristi Becker voiced her support for maintaining grassy spaces, noting their importance for children’s activities.
Community Garden Considerations
Mayor Lesa Heebner brought up community interest in establishing a community garden, referencing past challenges when the city assumed control after volunteer participation dwindled. She stated, “We have decided to include a community garden in the permanent improvements but will also prepare a backup plan in case we encounter similar issues.”
Focus on Interim Improvements
Councilmember Jewel Edson highlighted that the current emphasis is on short-term enhancements while longer-term strategies for the park are being formulated. She remarked, “Adding too many features now could limit our budget for the essential developments we truly want for the property.”
The council’s ongoing discussions reflect a commitment to creating a park that meets the diverse needs of the Solana Beach community while honoring its rich history.
